250th District Court
Judge Cory Liu presides over the 250th District Court in Travis County, Texas, which hears civil cases involving business disputes, personal injury, real estate, family law, and government regulations.
Judge Liu was born and raised in Austin, Texas, and attended Austin public schools. His parents lived through Communism in China and came to Texas to pursue the American Dream. Liu attended Oak Hill Elementary School, Kealing Middle School, and the Liberal Arts and Science Academy High School, where his participation in Youth & Government at the Texas Capitol helped him discover his passion for public service.
Judge Liu went on to attend the University of Chicago, where he majored in political science and philosophy, and Harvard Law School, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy. As a law student, Judge Liu worked at the Texas Solicitor General’s Office for then-Attorney General Greg Abbott, the Texas Supreme Court for then-Justice Don Willett, the U.S. Senate for Senator Ted Cruz, and the Office of the Governor for Jimmy Blacklock, who was General Counsel to Governor Abbott before his appointment to the Texas Supreme Court.
After law school, Judge Liu clerked for Judge Danny Boggs on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and Judge Andrew Oldham on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. He worked at law firms in Houston and Austin, focusing on legal matters involving businesses and government entities. His past clients have included the Texas Senate and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, the Texas Ethics Commission, and the Texas General Land Office under the leadership of Commissioners Dawn Buckingham and George P. Bush. His passion for public service led him to serve as Assistant General Counsel for the Office of the Governor, where he worked on regulatory matters and legislation during the 2019 legislative session.
